Hey, I know that taking a week long trip out of state is a huge financial ordeal for many people. Now, I've been on about 10 overseas mission trips and this will be my 4th IYC, so I got some fundraising skills I want to pass along.
The very first thing to remember: Its important to strongly raise funds outside of your home church. It's not that your home church doesn't or shouldn't want to help you on your way to the most awesome party on the planet - but its that they're already so over-tasked with raising cash for State Youth Conventions, Summer Camps, and other things that you could do a lot of good for the health of your congregation if you allowed them to help, but didn't focus primarily on their contribution.
Secondly, it is also very important to set small term goals for your fund raising. Break your trip down into small increments and focus on raising each one individually. When you have to raise thousands of dollars (for an over seas trip) or even if its just a few hundred dollars (like for IYC) the thought of raising it all at once can be overwhelming.
Try this fundraising trick: Break your trip down into something very real and tangible like "Hours" or "Miles". And have people sponsor you for a set amount of those increments.
Let me lay this out for you two ways.
1 - Miles. It is 485 miles from Tulsa to San Antonio (give or take 5 or 10 miles). Take the cost of your trip (for us here at Red Fork, our trip cost is about $500 a person plus food and attractions so lets say $700) and divide it by miles = this trip costs $1.45 PER MILE.....
2. Minutes. There are 168 minutes in 1 single week. IYC, for some of us who are tacking on extra trip events will last exactly 1 week. So, $700 divided by 168 minutes.... thats just $4.16 AN HOUR....
NOW THEN, since you've got everything laid out in MILE or HOUR SPONSORSHIP... if you have a dinner or a bake sale or a babysitter festival ... whatever it is... you asked to be paid in miles (or hours if chose to go that route)... not dollars.... (I know, I just raised some eyebrows) This gets your donor connected with you on your mission - they're no longer just throwing money at a cause, they're furthering your mission.... and more importantly, it helps illustrate how important even the smaller donations and how they can further you towards your fundraising goal.
Anyways... this is how I raised over $32,000 in one summer to take a trip practically around the world while I was just 17 years old. So, I encourage you all to give this a serious shot - it has some great potential...
I would also encourage you to gather some great ideas from 101 FUNDRAISING IDEAS which was produced for teenagers who are raising money to go on missions trips
(I know that IYC isn't really something most people would consider a missions trip, but it equals the cost of one easily)
